Rights and disclaimers

Most illustrations on this site were produced by a generative model from written descriptions, specifically for this site. They are not photographs of archaeological finds, museum objects or real places. The exception is the clearly marked museum-object photography in the digital cabinet and on the map.

The helmet in the weapons section is not a photograph of the Gjermundbu helmet; it is a drawing made from a description of it. Shapes and details were checked against archaeological types, but it remains a reconstruction, not a record. These images must not be used as archaeological evidence.

Photographs in the digital cabinet and on the map name the author, museum and CC BY 4.0 licence; a link to the original museum record sits beside each object. They are real images of specific objects, not reconstructions.

NORDICA’s permission to reuse site materials does not apply to these photographs. They may only be used under the licence shown in the museum record, with the required attribution retained.

The texts were written for this site. Every fact carries a link to its source, and disputed claims are marked as disputed with an explanation of what exactly is argued. The links lead to museum sites, academic publications and reference articles: we cite them, we do not copy their text.

The Wikipedia articles we link to are published under the CC BY-SA licence. Linking to an article is not reproducing it, and restating facts in our own words is not restricted by that licence.

The Monomakh and Noto Sans Runic typefaces are distributed under the SIL Open Font License.

The coastlines come from the Natural Earth dataset, which is in the public domain. The projection is Mercator: it exaggerates areas towards the north, but gives the straight meridians that seafarers invented it for.

This site collects nothing about you. There is no analytics, no counters, no advertising pixels, no contact forms and no sign-up. The pages make no requests to third-party services.

The name you type into the rune transliterator is processed inside your browser and is never sent anywhere. The runestone image is drawn on your side too: the download button saves what is already on your screen.

The site’s original texts and generated illustrations may be used freely for non-commercial, educational and outreach purposes with a credit to NORDICA. For illustrations, that credit must be accompanied by a note that they are generated reconstructions, not photographs of finds. Museum photographs are excluded and remain subject to the terms in the previous section.
